Rustic Bread Recipe

A traditional rustic bread recipe that yields a crusty exterior and a soft interior, perfect for any meal.

Ingredients
  

  • 3 cups warm water
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 pkg)
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 6 cups flour (750 g)
  • 3 tsp salt

Instructions
 

  • Mix water, yeast, and sugar in a large bowl. Let sit for 10 minutes until bubbly.
  • Add flour and salt. Mix until combined into a soft dough.
  • Cover and let rise for 1-3 hours.
  • Preheat oven to 450°F with a pizza stone or cookie sheet inside. Place a baking dish with 2 inches of water on the bottom rack.
  • Sprinkle flour on the counter, turn out the dough, fold, divide into two balls, and cut an X on top of each.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.

Notes

If the dough is too sticky, add ¼ cup flour at a time until manageable.
