Ingredients

  • 3.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.25 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2.25 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tbsp red food coloring
  • 0.75 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2-4 tbsp milk (to adjust consistency)

Instructions

  • Mix warm milk, yeast, and sugar. Let the mixture sit until frothy, about 5 minutes.
  • Combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, egg, red food coloring, and vanilla extract. Mix until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll out the dough to a 1/4-inch thickness. Spread with brown sugar and cinnamon mixture, then sprinkle with chocolate chips if using.
  • Roll the dough tightly, cut into 8 equal pieces, and place on a greased baking sheet. Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
  • Prepare the frosting by beating cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk until smooth. Spread over warm rolls and serve.

Notes

Let the dough rise longer for a fluffier texture. For an extra sweet treat, drizzle with additional powdered sugar glaze after frosting.
