A spooky and delicious Halloween appetizer featuring black pesto, roasted cherry tomatoes, and mozzarella skulls on toasted baguette slices.

Ingredients
  

Main ingredients

  • 6 oz mozzarella pearls (fresh)
  • 1 demi baguette baguette
  • 0.5 cup basil pesto
  • gel food coloring (black) black food coloring start with 1/8 tsp and add as needed
  • 12 oz cherry tomatoes
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • to taste salt salt
  • to taste black pepper black pepper
  • to taste red pepper flakes red pepper flakes
  • a few fresh basil leaves fresh basil
  • a drizzle balsamic vinegar glaze balsamic vinegar glaze

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake mozzarella in skull molds for 6-7 minutes, then cool.
  • Roast halved cherry tomatoes with olive oil, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes at 475°F (245°C) for 10-15 minutes.
  • Slice baguette into ½-inch pieces and toast at 375°F (190°C) for 8-10 minutes. Mix pesto with black food coloring.
  • Spread black pesto on toasted bread, then bake for another 8-10 minutes until edges are golden. Top with roasted tomatoes and mozzarella skulls.
  • Arrange on a platter, drizzle with balsamic glaze, and scatter fresh basil. Serve immediately.

Notes

For best results, prepare the mozzarella skulls ahead of time and assemble just before serving.
