Ingredients
  

Bread

  • 1 loaf brioche or challah bread (12-14 slices)
  • 4 large eggs eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk (or almond/oat milk)
  • 0.5 cup heavy cream (or half-and-half)
  • 0.5 cup granulated sugar (or brown sugar)
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract (or vanilla bean paste)
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cinnamon (or nutmeg)
  • Pinch salt

Instructions
 

  • Cut bread into thick slices and arrange in a greased dish.
  • Whisk eggs, milk, cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt until combined.
  • Pour custard over bread, soak for 30 mins or overnight, then preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Bake for 25-30 mins until golden and set. Broil briefly for crispy top if desired.
  • Sprinkle sugar on top and caramelize with a torch or under broiler. Serve with toppings.

Notes

Ensure the bread is slightly stale for best soaking.
