Ingredients
  

Dough

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour divided, plus more if needed
  • 2 envelopes rapid-rise yeast about 4 ½ teaspoons
  • 0.25 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1.5 cups whole milk
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese shredded (thick cut)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh garlic minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh chives minced
  • 2 tablespoons salted butter melted
  • 1 teaspoon fresh garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh chives minced
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt

Instructions
 

  • Mix 3 cups of flour, yeast, sugar, egg, and salt in a bowl.
  • Warm milk and add to the mixture; knead for 2 minutes.
  • Add remaining flour, cheese, garlic, and chives; knead until soft and pulling from sides.
  • Let dough rise covered for 45 minutes, punch down, shape into 12 balls, and place in a baking dish.
  • Let rolls rise for 30 minutes, then bake at 375°F for 22-27 minutes until golden.
  • Brush with garlic butter, sprinkle with salt, and serve warm.

Notes

For extra flavor, add herbs or more cheese as desired.
