Dough

  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 3/4 cup Dutch-process cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 3/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup semisweet or bittersweet chocolate chips (or chopped chocolate) optional

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line an 8x8-inch pan with parchment.
  • Brown the butter in a saucepan over medium-low heat until golden and nutty, about 10-15 minutes.
  • Whisk cocoa powder and vanilla into the browned butter until smooth.
  • Beat eggs and brown sugar until pale, then fold in the butter mixture. Add flour and salt, then chocolate chips if using.
  • Pour batter into prepared pan and bake for 25 minutes, testing for doneness with a toothpick.

Notes

For extra flavor, toast the chocolate chips before adding.
