Meat and Seasonings

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Potatoes and Dairy

  • 3 large russet potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 ½ cups whole milk
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground mustard
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese (for extra cheesiness)
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Sauté onion in olive oil until translucent, add garlic, then cook beef with seasonings until browned.
  • Layer sliced potatoes with melted butter and seasonings in a baking dish, add beef mixture, then top with remaining potatoes.
  • Mix milk, cream, flour, salt, mustard, and parsley; pour over casserole, top with cheeses.
  • Cover with foil, bake 45 minutes, then uncover and bake 15 more minutes until golden.
  • Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, sprinkle additional parsley or cheese before baking.
